About Us

Kevin Hopson is the manager of Commonwealth Hockey Services, LLC. He received his initial training through International Scouting Services (ISS), which is one of the top independent scouting services in the world. Kevin also acts as a scout for McKeen’s Hockey Prospects, where he focuses on NHL draft prospects. In addition to scouting, Kevin has written for several hockey publications, such as Center Ice Magazine, Hockeytalk.biz and Hockey’s Future.

Our Services

Our goal is to provide talent evaluation and referral services for youth hockey players in Virginia. Virginia is the country’s fastest growing hockey region, but players are still being overlooked because traditional scouting hotbeds are located in the Northeast and Midwest. Through our network of contacts, we can help open doors for players by exposing them to junior leagues, prep schools, Tier I youth leagues, colleges and top prospect tournaments around the country.

Services include the following:

1.
Objectives review

A player’s ambitions are very important to us. Once we know a player’s personal goals, we can get a more accurate feel for what needs to be done to reach their specific short-term and long-term targets.

2. Initial skills assessment

Even though parents and coaches are likely aware of a player’s skills, an evaluation is necessary for us to gauge potential. A skills assessment is also important in determining a player's appropriate level of play.

3. Progress tracking

After initially evaluating a player, we will track their progress throughout the season to determine if their “level of play” rating needs to be adjusted. In most instances, this process will just act as confirmation of the initial skills assessment.

4. Networking and referrals

Taking into account a player’s objectives (academic/athletic) and their skill level, we will try and refer them to the appropriate team/school/tournament. For example, if a player wants to try out for a Tier I (AAA) team and we believe they are capable of participating at this level, a letter of recommendation could be provided. It should be noted, however, that referral services are NOT guaranteed. Though we will try our best, it ultimately comes down to the skills and ability of the individual player.

5. Player profile

Even if we cannot successfully refer a player, he or she will receive exposure through our player profile book. This book provides a personal profile of each player in our database, including a brief description of their game, academic/athletic accolades, statistics, contact information (if desired) and so forth. Our player profile book is sent out to scouts, tournament directors, coaches, etc. twice a year and can act as a great networking tool.
